first off, skip this one if you're looking for straight-up stroke material -- this is an experimental art film, just one with explicit sex. little emphasis on come shots, few genital close-ups, but lots of fucking. internationally renowned digital artist shu lea cheang's i.k.u., is a japanese/english language porn movie that is unlike any porn video i've ever seen. it's a post-blade runner vision of a cyber metropolis populated with kinky sex robots, one in particular, who's on a mission to collect all the sex data she can. these bots "fuck to retrieve" data to bring back to the genom corporation, so the company can reproduce the experiences in sellable chips -- ostensibly available in one of japan's readily available vending machines.
the narrative is fast and at times disjointed, much like a typical japanese film. the film is explicit, yet not always explicit, has a lot of gender-bending, one of the supporting characters is an ftm (female to male transsexual), and data from men is often retrieved through digitally animated male anal penetration by the fembots. i loved the kinky strip club scene, which shows the gloss, glam and otherworldly outfits/hair/makeup that the trendy japanese youth wear -- not to mention the bona-fide drag queens, gay boys, and the very strange fishbowl fuck scene that showcases the showstopping cinematography in this film. and yes, there is a very sexy rope bondage scene courtesy of a real-life japanese rope bondage expert -- and many people in the film are artists, actors, japanese porn stars, and even a male japanese hustler. it made its debut at the sundance film festival 2000; it knows no gender stereotype boundaries, and makes way for the new wave of cyber porn.
I.K.U. is a story of IKU coder Reiko, who is a replicant belonging to the Genom Corporation which sells virtual sex. "Get ready to download a wildly imaginative vision of the future that is headed straight for your libido" - Sundance Film Festival
